OK - So It Is A Recession - Officially
Stats SA
have now confirmed that we are in a recession - great, as if we didn't
know already! Any business person with common sense can tell you that
growth has disappeared, the signs are everywhere. Our country is producing
less, and consumers are buying less. Profits are down and unemployment is
up. The most noticeable trigger has been that credit has been tightened,
so there is less money in circulation.
What can we do to help us weather the storm (which we think could last for
at least another 9 months)?
- Firstly remember that we are all
in the same boat - Chrysler, GM, Anglo American - no firm is
immune from the effects of the recession.
- Maintain a positive attitude - it
is a cycle, and recovery will follow.
- Avoid the debt spiral - this is
not a good time to borrow money in order to offset lower
turnover.
- Aggressively weed out unnecessary
costs.
- Motivate your team to search for
that little bit extra.
- Sell harder than you ever have
before.

The
recruitment industry has shrunk dramatically. The top firms have published
results that confirm this, and smaller firms are disappearing. Major
industrial and financial groups have frozen employment. Many well
qualified individuals are battling to find work.
"Survival of the fittest".
Good companies, with good processes, quality service, and top talent
development, will survive. Smaller bonuses, yes, but survive they will.
The winners need not be huge to survive, from one man businesses, to
mega-corporates, the principle remains.
Stand back, survey your business, and sharpen it up for the future. Throw
out what does not work. This is the perfect opportunity.
And remember "The Power of Attraction" - doom and gloom will
always attract the same!
